Carl Battista
Carl Battista, guitarist and Founding Member of Southern Earth. In 1973 I asked some grade school class mates if they wanted to start a band. At 13years old we formed Southern Earth in Williamsburg Brooklyn and have been playing on and off for over 50years.
We played everything from Rock to Funk to Dance and were one of the first bands to embrace the mix of music being produced in the 1970s.
I have played with various bands over the decades in clubs like CBGBs The China Club , Webster Hall The Village Gate. I’ve recorded at Warner Brothers studios in the 1980s and have played on numerous recordings over the years but I still love playing live and being able to play with your first band is special.
Joe Caputo
Joe Caputo guitarist and Founding Member of Southern Earth . I began my musical career at 12 years old when a schoolmate heard me playing guitar on my stoop in Williamsburg Brooklyn and asked if I wanted to join a band. We soon formed Southern Earth. We only knew a few chords and some simple beats but we managed to knock out tunes from Santana ,The Rolling Stones, The Doobie Brothers , Jimmy Hendrix, The Allman Brothers ,Kool and the Gang , The Ohio Players and eventually even Dance/Funk music.
We played Teen Dances Block Parties ,Bars,Clubs, all over the Williamsburg/ Greenpoint area that we were way too young to be in. I honed my playing skills by learning leads and rhythm by picking up songs off the 45RPM records of the day. The band always had a great sound and what I call ‘The Magic’.
We reunited over the years and are back again with the latest version of The Southern Earth Experience.
